Metabolism and blood vessels mutually affect each other: hormones, fats, proteins and sugars continuously flow through our blood vessels and influence their elasticity. “We are as old as our blood vessels”: this frequently used statement in medicine underlines the fact that our vascular system is crucially important for our quality of life.
Our medical activities focus on investigating the interaction between hormones (endocrinology) and metabolic processes and how this affects the vascular system. Using the methods employed in our centre, we record the dynamics of disease processes and can influence them through differentiated treatment procedures: consequently, diseases are promptly recognised in their early stages before they cause the first symptoms (preventive medicine). Even when chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus or cardiovascular disease have already developed their progression can be slowed or reduced to less severe forms.
